Days at the Morisaki Bookshop by Satoshi Yagisawa is a warm and introspective Japanese novel about finding new beginnings in unexpected places. The story follows twenty-five-year-old Takako, whose seemingly comfortable life changes dramatically when her boyfriend reveals that he has been seeing another woman and plans to marry her. Devastated by the betrayal, Takako leaves her job and withdraws from the world.
During this difficult period, her eccentric uncle Satoru offers her a place to stay in the small room above his second-hand bookstore in Jimbocho, Tokyo, an area famous for its many bookstores. Although Takako initially has little interest in books or her uncle’s unusual lifestyle, spending her days surrounded by shelves of second-hand books gradually changes her perspective.
As Takako begins reading, she discovers that books can provide companionship, new perspectives, and a way to reconnect with herself. Her relationship with Satoru also develops as they spend more time together and begin to understand each other’s loneliness and experiences.
