The Picture of Dorian Gray follows Dorian Gray, a handsome young man whose portrait is painted by the artist Basil Hallward. Influenced by Lord Henry Wotton, Dorian becomes fascinated with youth, beauty, and a life devoted to pleasure.
He makes a wish that the portrait will grow old instead of him, and the wish mysteriously comes true. While Dorian’s appearance remains unchanged, the portrait gradually reveals the effects of his choices and moral decline.
Oscar Wilde uses this supernatural story to examine vanity, temptation, identity, morality, and the consequences of pursuing pleasure without responsibility.
