The Plague follows the people of Oran as the city is suddenly overwhelmed by an outbreak of plague. Dr. Bernard Rieux and several others work to care for the sick while the city becomes increasingly isolated from the outside world.
As the epidemic continues, ordinary life is disrupted and the characters are forced to confront suffering, death, fear, and separation. Their different responses reveal contrasting ideas about responsibility, faith, morality, and human nature.
Through the crisis, Camus explores how people can respond to suffering through solidarity, perseverance, and acts of compassion.
